In a roundabout way... slowly.
Ubiquitous, central, convenient, fast and empty - the roundabouts of the 'burbs. How many roundabouts exist in this country? How much wasted space? Roundabouts are the black holes of suburbia and yet, with a few bricks, these roundabouts are the natural focus for our local communities.
From a car-focussed, post-war network of roads, connections and speed we propose an old idea - a slow architecture of local facilities and useful places. From fossil fuel to peddle power. From big distances to a ten minute walk. From fast to slow. From shopping centre to corner store.
"Long live the speed hump". "Welcome the traffic light".
We have tested this proposition in Elizabeth, South Australia. It could be applied in many Australian cities and suburbs.
