Think Brick and Climate Design

Think Brick Australia is using its research programme to develop guides to make climate design more practical and accessible to designers, architects and planners.

View our new online wizard to learn design strategies for your location.

Decades of climate data from the Bureau of Meteorology have been sourced and analysed using tools such as bioclimatic charts and Mahoney tables to formulate practical design strategies for 22 locations across Australia.  These locations were chosen to primarily to cater for the large population growth areas and to demonstrate the variety of design strategies required to cater for Australia's varied climate conditions.

This two-year project is due for a preliminary launch in March 2008 and completion in early 2009 when a textbook and web portal will be launched. The web resource will allow designers and planners to enter a postcode and access full climate data and design strategies for that area at the click of a mouse.

Air temperature, humidity, heating and cooling degree hours, solar irradiation and sky condition, rainfall and wind data are graphically depicted by month and season, along with ideal orientation, design implications and design strategies for each.  As an example of the enormity of the project approximately 21,000 pages of wind data is analysed for each location and takes in the vicinity of 260 hours to complete.  The wind data to date has uncovered some valuable information for designers which has not been considered before in earlier research.

Two locations, Perth and Brisbane, have been completed to date. A NSW location is currently being analysed and will be available in June 2007.  Think Brick Australia is excited and proud to be associated with ground-breaking material which can provide practical information to help designers and planners design sustainable built form and communities.
