Murray Street House is a freestanding exposed brick Edwardian home sitting in a typical suburban street in Armadale. The area of Armidale is characterised by beautiful red brick structures, including the train station, churches, converted warehouses and period homes however the general Edwardian feel of Murray street is slowly changing as blocks are being consolidated and replaced with mock period townhouses. We sought to reestablish the neglected Edwardian home and extend it without alienating the old nor confining the new. We looked to a material connection to extend the old, using recycled red brick to frame the new and then inserting a first floor volume within these new limits. As the brick walls approach the backyard they perforate and fold away revealing a level connection to the garden.
