Rozelle House 2
Horbury Hunt Prize 2011
TFAD Pty Ltd
The project was for the conversion of a large but extremely dilapidated stables structure to a house extension. Under the guidance of architect Tom Ferguson and builder Beau Jones the 10m x 10m gable roofed structure was to be transformed from a single use space to one that contained a living room, dining room, master suite, laundry, study and garage. The project philosophy was to use the existing structure to influence the outcome; volumetrically in terms of the internal space available for use, physically and environmentally in terms of the materials available for re-use and aesthetically in terms of maintaining the industrial textured feel of the building. Face brick was the predominant material used both internally and externally. Due to the extremely dilapidated state of the building it was disassembled so that new foundations could be poured. The bricks removed from site to the Brick Pit where they were cleaned before being returned to site for the rebuilding by Tony from APB Bricklaying. The warm varied and mottled texture of the old bricks now forms the principle character for the exterior and interior of the home, complemented by a neutral palate of other materials allowing the brick to shine.
