Project description:
Australia's newest aquatic international-standard centre is a mixed use development incorporating a swimming and diving complex with a health care centre and extensive car parking.
Segmental paving, predominantly clay pavers laid in a herringbone pattern, forms a plaza around the Centre's western and southern faces. The dominant ochre-toned 'Toasted Charwood' pavers are laid in a 25 mm bed of quarry sand over 300 mm of cement-stabilised road base. A metre-wide "lazy river" of cobbles, flanked by soldier courses of the ochre pavers, meanders along the full length of the plaza.
A second clay paver colour, a custom-made Taupe unit, is laid inside concrete concentric circles and rings that mimic ripples and help define main entry points to the Centre. These pavers are laid in a herringbone pattern that aligns with the main paving. Laying the 7000 m2 of clay pavers and the complex associated works were carried out in just eight weeks.
