PROJECT SUMMARY
The Western Grandstand represents the most significant redevelopment of this much loved South Australian asset in its 140 year history. The SACA's need for upgraded member's facilities and increased seat numbers were the key drivers for the project, but just as important was the need to maintain the picturesque image of Adelaide Oval.
The project is modern in appearance and functionality but sympathetic to the existing heritage fabric and wider oval surrounds. The new grandstand is built around the existing George Giffen stand and heritage brick arched walls, and adds new dining facilities, bars and operational facilities, all with views to the oval, together with a total of 14,000 seats.
When it came to material selection, brick was an obvious choice to express robust elements of the design and at the same time complement the existing brickwork and provide a sense of human scale to the large building. The brick piers and towers ground the building and connect it to the heritage elements while the lightweight steel roof floats above.
SACA's aspirations were for a grandstand that maintained and enhanced the experience of attending events at the oval, one that is intimate and has a strong sense of place.
