Bricks & Pavers - Australia's low maintenance building materials. Inspiring home designs & information.
Sydney Ports Corporation engaged Timothy Williams & Associates Pty Ltd to upgrade the wharf apron to accommodate a new gangway.
The bricks used were a strong spec 70mm paver from Boral in Federation Red and Blue to blend with the existing paving.
The new gangway is for the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay and is designed to replace two original gangways from the 1960s which are no longer suited to modern passenger liners. The new gangway was intended to provide greater comfort and safety for passengers due to a lower ramp gradient.
Tim Williams of Here Architects was engaged to design a new gangway that would work with the existing paving around the OPT. In addition to designing the gangway, an application of non-slip material to the concrete sections of the apron runway was coloured to match the paving.
The pedestrian-friendly character of the wharf apron has been maintained while incorporating more durable, purpose designed materials. The continuity of paving materials helps to unify the area from Circular Quay to Campbell’s cove. Tghis upgrade has meant the OPT can continue to welcome passenger ships to one of the most spectacular and sought after berthing positions in the world.
