Bricks & Pavers - Australia's low maintenance building materials. Inspiring home designs & information.
With a complex brief to sub-divide, demolish an existing cottage and re-invent a disused car garage workshop into two separate contemporary residences, SDA Architects had their hands full.
The front cottage's design was driven by the desire for the new building to fit in with the existing streetscape and characteristics of the area.
Wanting a fresh take on the "folksy cottage" look however, the new design used Boral's Choc Tan smooth face brick with features in Cinnamon to give the building a refined established feel with a modern touch.
Smooth face bricks were selected for their clean, contemporary styling as well as due to their high quality and consistency of colour.
The Choc Tan brickwork also complemented the use of sealed timber on the facade of the cottage.
The new design for the rear garage dwelling presented a challenge in blending old and new brickwork. The existing brickwork of the garage shell was still structurally sound and an integral part of the existing streetscape so was preserved and used in combination with new brick.
Fortunately with over 800 brick colours to choose from, it was easy to match the old brickwork with the new. The architect was happy with the final result saying that, "the difference between the old and new bricks gives the building an interesting character".
