Hervey Bay House

The creation of a farm house by Queensland architects, Owen and Vokes in 2008 had to consider the vast and open natural landscape in which it would be built.

The architects’ first move was to define a place on the vast site to create the new home. An existing stand of young eucalypt, topographical nuances and preferred scenes helped to mark the site where an enclosure of brick walls would stand.  The new enclosure includes a public outdoor court which simultaneously offers a comfortable place to dwell while enjoying the picturesque landscape.

With a brief to design a home to accommodate three generations of the one family, the architects had to consider the issues of independence, security as well as providing privacy.

The architects achieved this aim by creating a large, centrally-placed brick screen on the home’s entry level which acts as a shared facade that mediates depth, separation and privacy.

On the rear elevation, brick piers break the walls into 9 room-sized facades, giving each room, and therefore each generation, its very own private landscape outlook.

The architects selected face brick as the material to build the farm house, firstly in response to the existing streetscape, as well as a desire to create a timeless presence in architecture.

The bricks have been bonded in a humble way using a struck-flush mortar finish and the design allows sunlight to embellish the large planes of red brick. As brick walls are the staple of the garden and the house, the architects were able to make seamless thresholds between interior and exterior realms.

The Hervey Bay House was highly commended in the 2009 Horbury Hunt Award in its residential category.
