Middle Park

While restoring a c.1890-c.1915 Federation ‘Queen Anne’ style home in Middle Park, architect David Saunders from S2 design was inspired to document part of Australia’s architectural history by creating a unique and striking internal feature wall.

“As Australia’s architectural history is relatively brief, it was important for us to preserve any heritage value of the existing home. Working with the exposed brickwork as an internal feature wall gave us the opportunity to show the incredible history this home already had.”

The internal feature wall is made up of a patchwork of exposed brickwork documenting over 90 years of evolution in this suburban home.

“Every time the home had been renovated, new bricks from that era were used and we were able to add another chapter to the story as well. To be able to keep that history inside the home and not cover it created an exciting visual story.”

The home design blends the interior and exterior through the introduction of a huge curved wall of glass leading out to the home’s back deck.

The owners had seen the curved glass wall used in another home renovated by S2 Design and wanting to recreate the look in their own renovations. The glass wall not only introduces an abundance of natural light into the home, the northern orientated windows also help to significantly reduce the dependency on artificial heating and lighting.

Due to its unique design, the curved window frame was custom made in New Zealand and shipped to Australia to complete the design.
