This modern infill project has been constructed above an existing restaurant’s commercial kitchen and garage.

The owners of this single bedroom triple storey dwelling required a design outcome that respected the cultural and historical significance of its location within Ward Street by creating a space linked to its immediate environment in proportion and rhythm.

Theo Kerlidis from K20 Architecture said, “The main challenge for this project was in creating an urban space that offered a dynamic response to its locality. We found the use of traditional red brick and the use of lightweight steel and glass enabled the strengthening of this response through the play of the material forms.

“The use of traditional red face brick enabled us to evoke a traditional warehouse, industrial aesthetic which was appropriate to its context.”
The large expanse of glass on the home’s facade enables the dwelling to be opened up to street and allows connecting views around South Melbourne.
