Spline Home - Re-inventing the brick in a newly imagined suburbia.
This fresh typology responds to a multitude of demographics and the urgent need to prepare for energy descent. The design is flexible, equally functional for an elderly couple feeling the ache of age, as a young energetic family and accommodates multiple site configurations. It exploits and celebrates the multiple benefits and qualities of the brick.
Creates walls that protect, link, capture and define. Its sculptural flexibility enables complex shapes, its textures infuse character, its modularity creates dynamic rhythms and its mass captures and stores energy. To the south the wall is boldly orthogonal which shelters and allows privacy to the bedrooms, they are reassuringly solid and permanent. It is a dynamic counterpoint to the sinuous curving wall that both separates and connects spaces.
At the entry a pattern of missing bricks allows light and shadow to play through the gaps. The undulating wall flows and waves leading you on a dynamically rolling journey opening up into the living spaces. Here the sun is guided onto the thermal mass in winter, and sheltered from its rays in summer, the brick comes into its own storing coolth overnight to be released during the day.
A study nook is nestled into the curl of the wall and the curving island bench provides extra desk space to be borrowed. This solid brick centre piece defines the kitchen. Designed to capture free energy this element showcases the versatility of the brick; as thermal mass, as robust and durable material, as decoration and as art piece.
