The New Pavilion and Sports Field are additions to St Ignatius School, which had outgrown its existing campus in the Brisbane suburb of Toowong. The hilltop site offered opportunities for the school beyond the original client brief for a sports facility and toilet block. The school shared the architect's ambition for the project and the building developed also as a gathering space and reception hall.
The existing campus is a collection of brick buildings accumulated over time, the new field and pavilion continues this legacy of brick construction. By matching as closely as possible the existing brick buildings, the new building contributes to an integrated solution for the site. The limited palette of brick, concrete and steel, were selected for economy, durability and a humble informality.
The new works were designed to evoke a cultural memory of landscape - the curved retaining wall references walled gardens and the new building - a garden pavilion. Although the building is traditionally well mannered in its scale and materials, the building is formally contemporary with a playfulness appropriate for a primary school.
