Stratum House
Stratum house is an inner city house for two couples to share that gives back the earth it has built upon as roof top terrace. The long and narrow form of the house economizes plot width by vertically stacking its living spaces increasing the density the suburb. Inspired by the visual aesthetic of stratified rock, the house form consists of strategically stacked and layered volumes following the typography of the land. The uppermost stratum allows occupants to enjoy natural light and views from within private, landscaped retreats.
Brick is used to lend structure, solidity and permanence to the house. Brick courses of varying colour are offset in section between 50mm and 25mm to cast shadows and increase the textured, three dimensional appearance of the facade.
Stratum House employs Austral Bricks' Dynasty range, in Karington Silver, Indulgent White and Majestic Grey. All bricks are standard brick sizes of 76/110/230mm. The modular brick size allows for easy construction of the 2D curves and stratified layering of the facade that is characteristic of Stratum House. The thermal mass of the brick assists in the moderation of internal temperature throughout the day and year. The Low-E glazed Windows and Doors provide flexibility for occupants to control their environment through operable openings that allow for natural cross-ventilation. The modular nature of these doors and windows also allows them to be fully retracted to achieve a seamless opening out of the house to the exterior.
