The Corner Store Café is an aptly named conversion and extension to an existing corner store. The existing building was refurbished taking care not to lose the charm of the original building. New external terraces were added to both sides of the existing building and a small produce garden planted at the rear.
The existing store was reorganised with a central, open plan kitchen and barista station allowing patrons to walk through encouraging interaction with the kitchen staff. A large covered external dining terrace makes the most of Brisbane's hospitable climate.
The existing building, previously detached from the sloping site, is given a new plinth connecting the interior to the garden. The choice of brick for the new landscape terraces is a familiar reference to the residential context.
The completed project has successfully restored a much needed convenience to the local community. The new building provides a contemporary solution, honoring the tradition of the corner store with humble, straight forward materials and detailing.
