THE MARKET HOME
Seung Hyuk Choi
The design evolved from searching for the cause of the densification problem and analysing existing suburban homes. What jumped out strongly from this research was the fact that an incredible amount of space is given to large shopping centers with carparks. We are suffering because we had to create spaces for cars and purely a typology that evolved from our yearn for convenience. By decentralizing these large shopping malls, utilising existing green precincts and creating a new house typology, which incorporates retail functions, we are able to quickly gain a lot of space for more houses. This also allows greener suburbs to emerge where by nature, walking and cycling becomes the main method of transportation.
Implementation of this is only possible by reducing the footprint of built area in suburban homes and providing economic incentives to do so. Despite the introduction of new retail functions, the open / green spaces evident in existing suburban houses are protected and
treasured. The material, brick, was used for its durability and modular / pixellating nature. This characteristic generated a façade system which provides a much more interesting openings enhancing the light quality within the household. The narrow floor plate and greater setback from the boundary walls also enabled effective cross ventilation to occur. The use of a double brick wall also allowed for greater thermal control through its mass. Continuous banding of the pixellated pattern is also further enhances the interconnected courtyard.
In summary, the project offers the suburbs with a much greener, community-based, and livelier environment.
