unit_e house
The unit_e house takes the diagonal line and its innate dynamism to create a principle for the use of the hypothetical site/s, for the form of the dwelling and the organisation of the program, and for the arrangement of the brick unit within the screen walls. by slicing the site in this way, the external spaces have more generosity and flexibility in their proportion and functionality. for the internal open living space, this allows for a broader opening and connection to the external areas.
the design and the plan layout provide for a multiplicity of annexing, mirroring and shifting actions so as to provide opportunities for highly textured and variable medium housing development schemes. this has been dealt with in the plan by the east and west walls having no openings, providing thermal and lighting control in the single house design, and addresses fire and structural requirements for a dual occupancy or row house construction. the proposed design utilises a variety of brick construction techniques in conjunction with lightweight construction. the brick screens involve a diagonal jointing and placing arrangement whereby face bricks are mortared to create a perforated effect in front of a part brick, part glazed wall. apart from creating aesthetic interest, this screen wall provides for natural light and ventilation opportunities.
