Women's Health and Family Services

Influential architectural practice CODA Studio were engaged to provide their services to Women's Health and Family Services, a not-for-profit organisation providing medical and clinical services, counselling, information, community talks and workshops, referral, and outreach to women in Western Australia.

A pocket of land gifted to the organisation included two Queen Anne epoch worker's cottages and a warehouse of a similar age. A condition of development was to incorporate this heritage fabric within the structure of a new building. To achieve this CODA selected a standard modular brick that was both complimentary to the existing buildings and reflective of the urban environment in which they're situated. An experimental brick laying technique allowed for the formation of a herringbone pattern throughout the brickwork. The woven pattern created by this bespoke technique sits perfectly alongside the tuck-pointed cottages of yesteryear.

The Modular brick was purpose made by Boral Midland Brick for the project to ensure consistency of colour and uniformity of size. To allow for regularity of coursing throughout the basket weave laying pattern, CODA approached Boral Midland Brick confident in finding a solution after using specially designed bricks and a plethora of successful projects in the past.
